Fowl Ball, 2010
Forged and welded weathering steel
33 x 33 x 33 in.
Fowl Ball is a celebration of geese, ducks, turkeys and chickens. Descendants of dinosaurs that ruled the earth, now we eat them. These birds had fierce and fearsome ancient ancestors but today they can represent someone who’s silly, foolish, witless or cowardly.
This sculpture treats fowl with humor and respect, and portrays them on the lighter side of art.
Twenty-seven hand forged bird silhouettes form a loosely constructed sphere where the bird profiles become abstract disjointed shapes. The entire construction becomes a study of positive and negative spaces, with equal emphasis on the solid forms and the empty shape between them.
Fowl Ball appeared in "SculptureWalk 2010" in Sioux Falls, SD, and now appears in City Art Walking Sculpture Tour, Mankato, MN
